3D printing empowerment

Behind the rapid increase in market share, it is inseparable from the technology "engine" driven by 3D printing. In Hu Liren's view, 3D printing technology will continue to empower the company and open up new growth space for the skull repair industry.

In 2014, XAKT researched and developed personalized repair technology. For the first time, the 3D print head mold trial process was applied to the titanium mesh plate, which improved the degree of personalization of the titanium mesh plate skull repair. In 2019, the company further developed PEEK powder recyclable laser sintering 3D printing technology. It is reported that this technological breakthrough will greatly reduce the production cost of PEEK implantable consumables and improve the surface performance of the product. At present, the relevant product registration samples have been submitted for inspection and the registration test has been completed.

In fact, the high production cost is the current market pain point of PEEK skull repair products. Dr. Hu, CTO of XAKT, told Hay Think that the current market share of titanium materials in the skull repair market segment exceeds 93%, and PEEK materials only account for 7%. The low market penetration rate is mainly limited by high production costs.

"The clinical value and superiority of PEEK materials are becoming more and more significant: first, its material properties are closer to human bones, and more comfortable; second, compared to the pure covering of the skull by titanium materials, PEEK materials can be personalized and disposable. Complete the skull defect; third, metal materials are easy to form artifacts, which are not conducive to postoperative MRI and other examinations to determine intracranial lesions, while PEEK materials can avoid this problem; fourth, PEEK materials will not induce other lesions due to cold winter and hot summer "From the perspective of long-term development, PEEK materials will accelerate the replacement of titanium materials by virtue of their patient-friendliness. Therefore, reducing costs has become a new goal of XAKT's current technological breakthrough.

3D printing technology is the key to breaking the game. "3D printing has the characteristics of easy customized production and fast replication. It is expected to reduce the cost of PEEK skull repair and fixation products by more than 80%, and accelerate the industrialization and clinical popularization of new material products.
