Development Status of Proton Exchange Membrane Industry for Hydrogen Fuel Cells in China

Proton exchange membranes have long been monopolized by a few American and Japanese manufacturers such as DuPont, Gore, and Asahi Glass due to the complicated preparation process.

DuPont is the first company in the world to develop and sell proton exchange membranes. As early as 1962, DuPont developed perfluorosulfonic acid type proton exchange membranes with excellent performance, namely Nafion series products. Up to now, Nafion membranes are also the most widely used in the world.

With the continuous improvement of the localization rate of fuel cells, the development of China's proton exchange membrane industry has accelerated. At present, the production capacity of many Chinese proton exchange membrane enterprises is constantly expanding, which gives domestic proton exchange membranes a significant nearby large-scale supply advantage, and Obvious price advantage. At present, there are mainly two companies SDDY and WHLD that can meet the requirements for the use of hydrogen fuel cells.

The first phase of the 1.5 million m2 proton exchange membrane production line invested by SDDY was officially put into operation in November 2019. A total of more than 1,800 vehicles have been installed, and demonstration operations have been launched in the fields of hydrogen energy heavy trucks and public transportation.

The proton exchange membrane production line of WHLD Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. with an annual output of 1.3 million m2 was officially put into operation. The proton conductivity, gas permeability, mechanical strength and other aspects of the products are equal to or better than similar domestic and foreign competing products, but the price is only the same as that of competing products. half. At present, the company's proton exchange membrane market has received good feedback, and it has completed product testing and trials with more than 20 leading domestic companies, and has realized stacking applications.

In addition, many Chinese companies plan to build a new proton exchange membrane capacity of about 7.32 million m2.

Among them, ZJHC has developed 10-12 micron proton exchange membrane products, and the proton exchange membrane production line with an annual output of 300,000 m2 has been completed, and will be expanded to 1 million m2 in the future;

SZKR is currently strengthening the research and development and marketing of new products, and plans to form a proton exchange membrane production capacity of 5 million m2 in the next five years.

Other domestic enterprises are also accelerating the progress of R&D and production of proton exchange membranes, such as JSFY, SCDC, QCDL, etc.
